5 Essential Tips for Seamless Travel
By now, you agree that we are living in our new normal and things are not going back to the way they used to be. Instead of complaining, we can choose to adapt and continue on with anticipation and excitement for the years ahead.
In the latter half of 2021, I found myself traveling quite a bit and realized I have to become more efficient, and tech savvy to not compromise my travel experiences during the COVID-19 restrictions.
I've put together a list of 5 tips (and hacks) that will certainly help you be a better equipped traveler in our new normal.
Tip #1 - Passport and Vaccine Card Combo Holder
Ok, this is not to persuade anyone to get vaccinated, however, many countries are making it very hard to enter if you are not! For United States issued vaccination cards, you are not allowed to laminate your card (for preservation) after completing a vaccine series.
Of course I had to find a solution because I'm too cute to be carrying my card in a ziplock bag (insert eye roll). I found a holder on Amazon and it has been perfect! It's cute compact and comes in 31 different colors.
Tip #2 - Trusted Traveler Program
Have you been to the airports recently? Everyone and their cousins seem to be traveling and I don't blame them. People are embracing the outdoors again and planning weekend getaways and a few are planning more long-haul travel. But if you are anything like me, standing in line for 30 minutes to then take your shoes off to walk on the dirty airport floor grosses you out.
Enter in: The Trusted Traveler Program. This program allows travelers to use expedited lanes at airports and certain international boarders. The Global Entry Program offers expedited entry from both domestic and international ports and includes TSA PreCheck ($85 value). The great part is this program is also available to select foreign nationals.
The process requires an in-person interview and fingerprinting. Two weeks ago I flew to Miami International Airport for my interview and was in and out in no time and received on the spot approval. Someone shout FAVOR! There is a huge backlog of interviews and the next available appointment in my state was 8 months away!
Even if you only travel a couple times internationally per year, I think it is worth the investment of $100 for a 5-year pass. You can now keep your shoes on and laptops stay in your bag at security checkpoints.
Tip #3 - Test Requirements
I won't be a scientific snob and dive into test name technicalities, but most people seem to mix them up. Do they need a PCR test, an antigen test, a "rapid" test and what's the difference between each test?
My best advice to you would be to research the government requirements for COVID-19 testing to enter their country and then request that test type from your home town. It is not worth getting stuck at an airport awaiting local testing or worse yet, being put in quarantine because you got the wrong test.
Many nations across the globe are beginning to require a PCR test and reject the antigen test for entry. Pay attention to timing and ask how long it will take to get your results back before departure. Print a copy of your results and keep them with your passport.
Tip #4 - Masks and Mask Mandates
I know this one is controversial, but many nations have VERY strict mask mandates and will fine you HEAVILY (think $500 per offense) if you are caught walking down the street.....yes outside...with out a mask on.
Personally, I travel with several types of masks and switch them out based on what I'm doing. It is probably psychological, but I find my breathing outside in a disposable mask altered and so I switch to a cloth mask.
Tip #5 - Sanitizing Supplies
Lastly, remembering to keep yourself germ free will prevent you from getting sick during your trip or when you return home. Airlines now allow passengers to carry a full-size hand sanitizer in your carry-on. I always pack Lysol wipes to clean the screens and armrests of airplanes before I sit. I know they say they clean in between each flight, but it is rushed and not up to my standard.
Do the same thing when you get into your hotel room, wipe it all down! If you are stuck outside in the elements try these paper soap sheets. I love portable options of everything and try to have these anytime I travel.
Traveling has changed so much in the last 18 months. Don't be discouraged. If you plan ahead and prepare, I'm certain you will have just as much fun.
Let 2022, be a year of UPGRADED travel.
